Ivy drove a white SUV that was filled with shopping bags and gift wrap. âSorry about the mess,â she said. âIâm just here for the holidays, so Iâve been rushing around with all the preparations. I live in Santa Barbara. Iâve got an art gallery there.â
âSounds nice.â
âItâs a living. What I really want is to make a living making art, not just selling it. Iâve sold a few of my own pieces, but not enough to call myself a professional.â She sighed. âI donât mind working hard, but just once, Iâd love to catch a break. How about you? My mom said youâre from Houston.â
âWeâre not so different,â Brenda said. âIâm a content creator to pay the bills, but what I really want is to be a writer. I mean, I am a writer, but I havenât published anything yet. I write novels for children.â She wondered if the bit sheâd written this morning was any good. âIâd love to catch a break, too.â
Ivy drove slowly past Santaâs gingerbread cottage, which had a line of children waiting outside. âMaybe we should stop in and see the big guy about it.â
âIâve never had much luck with Santa.â
Ivy drove into the town square and found a parking spot. By light of day, it was even more glaringly Christmassy than it had looked last night. People in bright winter clothes were strolling around, visiting the shops and cafés, taking pictures and pulling little kids on sleds. There was a line outside a place called the Sky River Bakery, and a cozy-looking corner bookstore. In the park in front of the town hall there was a bustling winter market, which seemed to be patterned after the Christmas markets of northern Europe. The area was filled with booths and displays of handmade goods, and a guy roasting something in a brazier over hot coals.
Ivy noticed her staring. âEver try roasted chestnuts?â
âIâll pass, thanks,â Brenda said.
âNot my favorite, either,â Ivy said. âItâs a tradition. This is a town with lots of traditions, as Iâm sure youâre finding out. Come on. Letâs get you something nice and warm to wear.â They crossed to a cute boutique called Zuzuâs Petals. The windows displayed an abundant winter wardrobeâsweaters and capes, downy parkas and hats, mittens and boots.
âFair warning,â Ivy said. âThis is one of those shops that makes you want everything. SuzanneâZuzuâhas incredible taste.â
âIâll try to restrain myself,â Brenda said. âSince I live in Houston, I wonât need much, right?â
âOh, and just another heads-up,â Ivy said. âSuzanne, the owner, is Adamâs ex. Willyâs mom. Itâs not superweird or anything, but I thought you should know.â
âNoted,â said Brenda, her senses sharpening. She couldnât deny a deep curiosity about Adamâs ex-wife. The mother of that adorable little kid. Former wife of that very nice guy.
Ivy must have sensed the unspoken questions, because she said, âThe two of them get along for Willâs sake. They just werenât compatible. Not the right fit, even though they tried. But we all get along like adults.
